Editor's Note -- September 29, 2010

I wanted to update you this week on the Mideast peace talks but decided at the last minute to summarize it in a few lines and focus the blog instead on an important story that is not getting much attention in mainstream media. Hope you read the blog and share it.

US Envoy George Mitchell is in the Middle East for talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. He will then have meetings with Arab leaders around the region. Reports indicate that Netanyahu is not likely to accept the US proposal for an extension of a Jewish settlement building freeze in the mostly Arab West Bank. Abbas had indicated that he would pull out of the talks if settlement construction resumes; but he said that he will make his decision known after an Arab League meeting October 4 in Cairo. French President Nicolas Sarkozy has called for European involvement in the peace talks.

The pressure is on all parties now to either find a way to move forward or break down the direct talks. If the talks collapse, the door will open for extremists on all sides to take center stage. Jordan's King Abdullah II has predicted an all out war by year's end if settlement building continues and the talks fail.
