Breast Cancer: Make it Your Battle

Special blog for Twestival Beirut 2011

As a teenager, I witnessed a very emotional whispering scene between my mom and her friend. Loris was the second wife of my mom’s cousin and was revealing something that looked like a mixture of shocking, sad, painful, desperate and scary all at once kind of news. I didn’t dare ask what was going and no one ever told me. But it was evident by Loris’ changing looks from one visit to another that something was eating her up from inside. She shrunk and her skin changed color with time. Her hair fell off, she covered her head with a nice scarf and later a wig. Then my mom started visiting her at home as she couldn’t make it out of the house. The last time my mom saw her was at the hospital as she was ready to give up her fight with breast cancer.

What Loris was confiding in my mom on that awfully sad day was that she’s had a lump in her breast for a long time but didn’t dare mention it to anyone. When she couldn’t hide it from her husband anymore, they went to the doctor, she was diagnosed with an advanced form of breast cancer. She was “scared to death” but at the same time, wanted to keep a strong front as she was worried what the family would do without her.

  1. Thanks for sharing O! What a calamity the big C is. It seems to hover over our lives, and catches us when we least expect it. I can only imagine how bad it is for those who are struck by this terrible illness, but I do know how difficult it is too for those around a loved one suffering or recovering from cancer. We support, help, pray and hope... God bless :-)
