Breast Cancer: Make it Your Battle

Special blog for Twestival Beirut 2011

As a teenager, I witnessed a very emotional whispering scene between my mom and her friend. Loris was the second wife of my mom’s cousin and was revealing something that looked like a mixture of shocking, sad, painful, desperate and scary all at once kind of news. I didn’t dare ask what was going and no one ever told me. But it was evident by Loris’ changing looks from one visit to another that something was eating her up from inside. The end of 2008 and beginning of 2009 ushered in a new wave of violence in the Middle East in the form of an Israeli incursion into Gaza with the aim of quelling the Hamas attacks against Israel. Western media reported it from a distance because Israel did not issue permits for western journalists to enter Gaza and give their first hand accounts of what was going on, citing concern over their safety. To this day, there are unfinished inquiries and many controversies surrounding the Israeli attack which was protested around the world. Read the UNHRC Goldstone Report details below.

Social Media Were Made For Arabs

Part 2

Since the inception of what we refer to today as social media, we’ve seen many stories break and develop on social networks before becoming major news stories on traditional media. For each one of us there is a memory I’m sure of that one event they read about first on Twitter or Facebook or in an article that was shared by e-mail or a link that was sent during an IM chat that turned out to be not only a true story but a huge one, perhaps even a breaking news story that changed the way they think about the role and consumption of social media.
